Tablet sales seen doubling

Sales of tablet computers in India are expected to at least double this year to 6 million, the market’s third year of growth, as new devices attract business users and low costs draw consumers, research firm CyberMedia forecast.
Sales are likely to have reached 3 million in 2012, up from about 0.5 million in 2011, the firm estimated on Friday, citing data for the quarter to end-September, when companies led by Samsung Electronics Co Ltdsold 1.1 million tablets.
With the launch of low-cost devices running on Google Inc’s Android platform by local firms, sales of tablets and smartphones have grown rapidly in the last two years. A slew of global makers of tablets have also entered the market.
In 2013, new tablets based on Microsoft Corp’s Windows 8 platform and companies’ adoption of tablets for business applications will change the market significantly again, Faisal Kawoosa, lead analyst at CyberMedia’s telecom practice, said in a statement.
India is the world’s second biggest telecommunications market with about 900 million mobile phone accounts. But computer penetration is low, and only about a tenth of its 1.2 billion people have access to Internet.
Samsung had a 23.9% share of tablet computers sold in India in the July-September quarter last year, CyberMedia Research said.
Local firm Micromax ranked second with 15.3% of the market, while Datawind, the maker of Aakash tablet, billed as the world’s cheapest tablet computer, ranked third, it said in the report.
Apple Inc, the maker of iPad tablet computers, was ranked fifth with an 8.7% share, the data showed.
The average sales value of tablets during the quarter was about `13,200, while 63.5% of the sales were below `10,000, CyberMedia Research said.

Acer to launch 7-inch Android 4.1 tablet at Rs 7999 in India

The competition in the budget tablet market seems to be getting hotter. Acer is reportedly all set to launch its upcoming Iconia Tab B1 for Rs 7,999 in India. The tablet is speculated to be rolled out in early 2013.

Previously, Wall Street Journal quoted a source as saying that Acer was working on a $99 tablet that will have a 7-inch screen with 1024x600presolution and run on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). A US Federal Communications Commission(FCC) application for the tablet revealed others specifications of the Google Nexus 7 rival, including 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 512MB RAM, 8GB onboard storage, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi as well as microSD support.

Though it made an appearance at US FCC, the tablet according to WSJ, is aimed primarily at emerging markets. Images of Acer Iconia Tab B1 surfaced on a Serbian forum and were confirmed to be real by WSJ's source.

Earlier in November, Asus-manufactured Google Nexus 7 was launched at Rs 19,999 in India, much higher than expected, considering that the device sells for $199 in US. According to a CyberMedia research, Micromax was the leader in the Indian tablet market in second quarter of 2012. In October last year, Manufacturers Association of IT predicts that the country's tablet market is set to grow by 40% till 2015-16, to 7.3 million units from 0.95 million units in 2012.

Acer Iconia B1 Specifications
  • Display screen size 7.0 inches LCD capacitive touchscreen
  • Display resolutions are 1024 x 768
  • Acer Iconia B1 is provided with a 1.2 GHz dual core processor
  • It runs on Android V4.1 Jelly Bean operating system
  • Internal memory is 8GB
  • Expandable memory up to 32 GB
  • RAM provided is 512 MB
  • Audio player AAC, FLAC, MP#, WMA, WAV and OGG
  • Video Player AVC MPEG-4, AVI j264

If Acer captures the attention of the Indian tablet buyers with its Iconia Tab B1, it is expected to give tough competition to Micromax's Funbook series, the leader in the tablet segment in India. It is widely expected that the Taiwanese manufacturer will showcase the device at Consumer Electronics Show, scheduled for Jan 8 to 11, 2013, in the US.

Apple's iPhone 5 starts strong in China but shares pressured

Apple Inc sold more than 2 million iPhone 5s in China in just three days after its launch there on Friday, its best ever smartphone launch in the country, but Apple shares fell on Monday after Citi downgraded the stock.
The highly anticipated release in China, Apple's second-biggest market, has not eased worries about stiffer competition in mobile devices that has driven a slide in the share price of the world's most valuable technology company.
Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said last week that Apple had started cutting orders to iPhone suppliers to balance excess inventory.
Sales of Amazon.com Inc's cheaper Kindle Fire tablets have also surged this year and rival Microsoft Corp recently forayed into the market with its Surface.
Apple shares have fallen on seven of the last 10 trading days, with several analysts cutting their price targets on the company's stock.
The shares were down 1.3 percent at $502.76 in early trading on the Nasdaq. The stock has shed nearly 13 percent of its value since the beginning of this month to Friday's close.
Citi Research downgraded Apple's stock on Sunday to "neutral" from "buy", and lowered its price target to $575 from $675, citing diminishing hype around the iPhone 5 and improving competition in smartphones.
But Topeka Capital Markets remained upbeat, suggesting Chinese iPhone owners would upgrade from iPhone 4 models.

How Apple iPad is revolutionising teaching in modern age

A verb chart, posters and pupils' work adorn the walls. The children lean over their desks, seven and eight-year-old brows furrowed in concentration.

In its essence, it is a scene that could have been recorded at any time since Shakespeare was at school.

Except it isn't. Instead of textbooks, the pupils are pouring over tablet computers linked in to a wireless broadband network.

There are still pencils in their hands but for how much longer?

In an age when toddlers learn to use touchscreens before they can speak, tablet technology is about to take teaching into a brave new word, and McCluskey's students have been invited to the preview.

In September, the British School of Paris (BSP), where McCluskey teaches, became one of a handful of schools across Europe to take the plunge and decide to restructure their teaching around the technology that is already integral to its students' lives.

Every pupil at the international school on the outskirts of Paris, from four-year-olds to university-bound 18-year-olds and every member of staff, was issued with an iPad at the start of the autumn term.

Not everyone was convinced. Parents fretted that their children would be on Facebook as soon as their teachers' backs were turned, or that an iPad in the bag would make then a target for mugging.

Three months on, everyone involved is still adapting and the experiment has not been without hiccups. Surfing on the move during break times, for example, had to be banned after a few children took a tumble.

But overall, the verdict is positive from both pupils and staff.

Samsung Galaxy Note III to have 6.3 inch screen

Here's some news for Samsung's Galaxy Note series fans. According to a news report in Korea Times, Samsung will include an OLED screen measuring 6.3-inch in Galaxy Note III, a massive increase from Note II's 5.5-inch display.

The report also said that the South Korean manufacturer Samsung will unveil its Galaxy S IV, the upcoming flagship, at Mobile World Congress in January 2013. It is speculated that this phone will have a 4.99-inch screen that will be unbreakable and bendable.

Galaxy Note II was unveiled in August this year and went on sale the following month, clocking sales of over 5 million by October. Its successor is likely to be launched in the second half of 2013 only.

If Galaxy Note III indeed has a 6.3-inch touchscreen, it will extend the size of 'phablets' even more and further blur the lines that divide tablets and smartphones. At present, no phone comes with a screen bigger than 5.5-inch (Galaxy Note II), though various tablets with 7-inch screens do support voice calls over GSM networks. A Huawei executive previously confirmed that the Chinese manufacturer is working on a smartphone with a 6.1-inch screen. Sony is also rumoured to be working an Android phone with a 6-inch display, named Yuga.

Apple testing new TV

US technology giant  Apple has been working with component suppliers in Asia to test new TV sets in a possible move to branch into the television market, a report said Wednesday.

Apple has been testing several TV prototypes for large-screen high-definition TV for a few years, sources familiar with the situation were quoted by the Dow Jones Newswires as saying.

Among the suppliers, Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision has been working with Japan's Sharp Corp on the design of the new TV, the report said, citing unnamed company officials.

Hon Hai, better known as Foxconn, is the world's largest maker of computer components and produces goods for tech giants including Apple, Sony and Nokia.

Apple's move into the television market would intensify competition with some of its biggest suppliers, including South Korea's Samsung Electronics, the world's biggest TV maker by shipments.

Hon Hai also started selling 60-inch TV sets in Taiwan from last month in an apparent bid to beef up production of a panel plant in western Japan used to be owned by Sharp that it has invested in, company officials have said.

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook has described the TV business as "an area of intense interest" in a recent interview with US media, according to the report.

Chinese brands push Apple to 6th spot in China

Apple Inc's rank in China's smartphone market, which is set to become the world's largest this year, fell to No.6 in the third quarter as it faces tougher competition from Chinese brands, research firm IDC said on Thursday.
Apple's third quarter ranking was two spots below its position in the second quarter in terms of China's smartphone market share by shipments, IDC said. The US giant's market share in China was under 10 percent in the third quarter.
IDC's release comes a day after Apple's shares fell more than 6 percent, logging its biggest single-day loss in four years, as a result of stiffer competition in the mobile devices market.

Samsung Galaxy S4 may have unbreakable screen

Samsung Electronics, the world's leading technology company by revenue, is likely accelerating the launch of its next-generation flagship Galaxy smartphone -- which may come with a breakthrough unbreakable screen.

Codenamed "Project J" after mobile division chief JK Shin, development of the new Galaxy S IV could be aimed for release by as early as April, according to analysts and tech blogs.

And, as smartphones increasingly look alike - the converging form factor - an unbreakable screen could be a big selling point for the Galaxy, which is battling Apple Inc's iPhone to lead the $200 billion plus smartphone market.

The Galaxy S IV is also expected to have bigger and better display, powerful quad-core processing power and a 13-megapixel camera, with picture density improving to 441 pixels per inch (ppi), a big improvement from the Galaxy S III's 306 ppi and better than the iPhone 5's 326 ppi.

"Looking to the first half of 2013, we see evidence of Samsung likely accelerating the release of the Galaxy S IV - compared with May (this year) for the Galaxy S III," said UBS analyst Nicolas Gaudois. "We believe preparations for volume manufacturing of unbreakable plastic substrate displays continue. All in all, we could see a strong products push in the high-end in the first half, followed by other releases."

Samsung declined to comment.

Samsung, a major backer of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display, is a frontrunner in developing unbreakable screens, as OLED panels can replace glass substrate with plastic material. Down the road, mobile gadgets could be flexible as well as unbreakable.

"Eventually, they'll have unbreakable and flexible displays. Either the Galaxy S IV or S V will have unbreakable and even possibly flexible and foldable displays by 2014. That's going to be a game-changer," said Mark Newman, an analyst at Stanford Bernstein in Hong Kong.

Both Newman and Gaudois are ranked as 5-star analysts, the top ranking, by Thomson Reuters StarMine for their recommendations on Samsung.

Courtroom revisited
It would also be a game-changer for Samsung, which has built its reputation as a 'fast follower' of others' technologies and designs.

The South Korean consumer electronics giant faces off against Apple again on Thursday in a US courtroom for a follow-up ruling on whether it copied some of its US rival's patents and should pay the $1 billion awarded to Apple by jurors in an August verdict.

Samsung wants the verdict overturned, while Apple wants the damages to be increased and Samsung phones banned in the United States.

Since that landmark verdict, however, Samsung shares have gained 14 percent to record highs, while Apple shares - dented by a maps app fiasco, tight supply of its iPhone 5 and ever tougher competition in the mobile market - have slipped by nearly a fifth, wiping more than $120 billion off its market value.

Barring any extra costs related to the US ruling, Samsung should report a fifth straight record profit this quarter, as profits from its component business recover and more than offset thinning margins on mobile phones - squeezed by higher year-end holiday marketing campaigns.

"Samsung's strength extends beyond cool products, they're also a leader in the technology behind these devices. We see further upside to Samsung's stock as success in smartphones continues and chips and display profits also rebound," said Newman. "In smartphones, the opportunity is for Samsung to take more share from Apple in the premium segment, where Apple is still dominant."

UBS estimates Samsung will ship around 22.5 million of its Galaxy S III and Note II devices in the quarter to end-December, up from 20 million in July-September. Shin said in November that Galaxy S III sales would hit 40 million by the end of this month.

In a worst-case scenario for Samsung, US judge Lucy Koh could treble the damages payable to Apple, given the jury in August found Samsung "willfully" infringed some Apple patents.

"That would be a major blow to Samsung's fundamentals and overall investor sentiment, but it's not the most likely scenario," said Young Park, a 4-star StarMine analyst at Woori Investment & Securities.

HTC Deluxe smartphone leaked

Ready for the era of 5-inch smartphones? HTC's latest big-screen beauty looks set for a UK launch
The trend towards larger smartphone screens looks to be continuing after more leaked shots of the purported UK-bound HTC Deluxe appeared online.
The 5-inch HTC Deluxe (or HTC Deluxe DLX) looks as if it'll be the European version of the Japanese HTC J Butterfly and the American HTC Droid DNA handset.
Those international phones, unveiled by HTC during the course of the last few weeks featured a 5-inch, full HD 1080p display.
The device also brought a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, an 8-megapixel camera, 2GB of RAM, 4G LTE mobile internet and the Android Jelly Bean (4.1) operating system out of the box.
The new, rather official-looking photos, obtained by GSM Arena, show a super sleek white handset and the presence of Beats Audio tech.
We've still heard nothing official from HTC about a potential UK launch, but we'll let you know if and when news is forthcoming. Regardless of HTC's plans for the 'Deluxe' we've got a feeling we'll be seeing quite a few 5-inch smartphones arriving in the early part of 2013.

New iPad 3 review

New iPad 3 Review: A higher-def screen and a slicker look. Does the iPad 3 mark a point at which resistance to Apple’s market-leading tablet becomes futile?

New iPad 3 review

Love

  • Stunning screen
  • Best app and AV stores
  • Superb interface

Hate

  • Not a huge leap from iPad 2
  • Camera still awkward to use
The new iPad 3 is not revolutionary, it’s evolutionary, and according to Apple it’s even “resolutionary”, whatever that means.

As with the Apple iPhone 4S bump, the hotly anticipated new iPad launch is largely about incremental, hardware upgrades; under-the-bonnet stuff that clearly annoys the hell out of everyone seeking a headline-grabbing design change.

New iPad 3: Build

Launched alongside the new Apple TV, the new iPad 3 looks much the same as the Apple iPad 2. The Home button remains, despite the big tease of the launch invite’s imagery, but where successive iThings of the past have been thinner, lighter and the proud owner of new monikers, Apple’s latest tablet is thicker (by 0.6mm), heavier (by 50g) and has no identifying numbers or letters to its name.
However, the third-generation iPad is also faster, more powerful, has by far the best screen ever seen on a tablet and will allow developers, including T3, to create apps of greater power than ever by exploiting all of the above. So, should you be shelling out for one?
New iPad / iPad 3 unboxing video: The coolest unboxing ever (review continues after the video)

New iPad 3: Screen

Android aficionados will find 2048x1536 reasons not to buy, but a bitch of a screen ain’t one. Some 3.1 million pixels at 264ppi are now crammed into the 9.7-inch display – the leading Android tablets, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Asus Transformer Prime, come in at 1280x800.

Put the new iPad 3 side by side with the iPad 2 and the improvement is, quite visibly, clear. On the older iPad, apps in folders are just blobs of pixelated colour; on the new one you can almost make out text.
The Apple Retina Display smooths out edges and renders text pin-sharp so ebooks, websites and documents are so much easier on the eye. There’s better contrast, greater definition with still and moving images, and better colour saturation – an improvement of 44 per cent over the iPad 2, Apple reckons.
New iPad / iPad 3 video: Ultimate Retina Display test (review continues after the video)

New iPad 3: 1080p HD

Another Retina reward can be seen with HD video now up to 1080p – yes, Apple is updating its iTunes movie catalogue to full HD – and stills up to 19 megapixels, though you’ll have to import the latter as the onboard camera only boasts five. Both look stunning in terms of reproduction clarity, mind.
Developers will also need to optimise their digital nuggets to take advantage of the display hike; until then, you may suffer some slight blur. Needless to say, we’re hard at work making T3: iPad Edition Retina-ready.

New iPad 3: Performance

To power this next-gen display the new iPad needs extra processing grunt, and it’s provided by an improved dualcore chip, the A5X, with a quadcore GPU. While HD video and menu swiping don’t appear any smoother than before – they were already plenty smooth – gaming, as you’d anticipate, really benefits.

Playing the upcoming Infinity Blade: Dungeons, the polygonal-pushing experience is exceptional, with quality not far off what we’ve seen so far on the Sony PS Vita. There are multiple layers, complex shading, frenetic action and minimal slow down.

Non-optimised games look pretty much identical to those on iPad 2, however. Will developers patch older games to bring them up to Retina standards? We’ll see…
Asus and Toshiba may be rubbing their hands in glee, with both having announced “proper” quadcore tabs in recent months. However, with the dedicated chip handling graphically intensive tasks, the dualcore A5X seems more than adequate, keeping the new iPad quick and slick, even when processing the likes of iPhoto and GarageBand.
Can the new iPad / iPad 3 take on the Amazon Kindle Fire? We put the two head-to-head (review continues after the video)

New iPad 3: Camera

A lesser upgrade is the rear-facing iSight cam. Its f/2.4 aperture optics are pinched from the iPhone 4S, but with a five-meg resolution rather than eight. Images are better than the iPad 2’s but tablet cams are still hardly the last word in convenience – one-handed tap-to-focus is mission impossible – and results remain a way off dedicated compacts, especially indoors or in overcast conditions.
